Today, May 2, 2022, a document was leaked to the press that suggests the U.S Supreme Court is preparing to strike down Roe v Wade. This ruling states (in the leaked unofficial document) that the issue of abortion is not a Federal issue but one that should be decided by individual states. While I believe that abortion anywhere is wrong, I am grateful that we are very close to seeing the highest court in the land lift its 50 year sanctioning of the murder of the unborn. There will be much more said on this in the coming days and the actual decision (not a leaked copy) remains to be seen.
My simple reminder tonight is this:
If you claim to be a follower of Christ, do not accept that this is a political issue or one of women’s rights. It is neither. Your belief as it relates to abortion is directly connected to your belief about God and the value that He places on human life.
As Christians, we know that Jesus Christ the Son of God in fact died on the cross murdered by His creation so that He could pay the price for our sin. He did this so that humanity, the life that God gave, that He created, that He provided, could be redeemed and reconciled to Himself. That’s how important human life is to God.
We could look at the Bible and go all the way back to the beginning and understand that in the beginning, God created. He created all that is in the world by simply speaking. But when it came to creating mankind, He did something very different. When God created man He kneeled down, picked up the dirt on the ground, and created out of it, man. And then, as if that was not enough, He breathed life into that newly formed man from his own mouth. That’s how valuable human life is to God.
If we choose to look at this issue apart from the Bible, historically across generations, we would learn that nations who devalue human life are nations that walk away from God and lose His blessing. And any nation that does not value life, particularly the life of the unborn, certainly does not value the lives of those who have no usefulness in society.
When we say that the unborn, those who cannot protect themselves, have no value, that they are not worth protecting, then who is it that we should protect? Does any life then have value? I would argue not. In the United States, there are more than 600,000 abortions performed every year. Since 1973 when Roe v Wade was finally approved by the Supreme Court, the decision that made abortion legal in the United States, more than 60 million babies have been killed! When we talk about the issues that are important to God, and I realize there are many, I would argue that there is no issue as important as the sanctity or value of human life.
Much rhetoric and debate will take place in the coming days, but those who value God’s law over that of nations need to:
1. Hold fast to the truth of Scripture.
2. Stand up for those who cannot stand up for themselves.
3. Demonstrate compassion for those who are hurting.
4. Reject the idea that God should not be brought into the public square.
5. Pray for safety and peace for the Justices standing up for the unborn.
6. Rest in the truth of His sovereignty.
Psalm 33:12 Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD; and the people whom he hath chosen for his own inheritance.
